Mr. Rice teaches Kyle Switzer the right measurements for the special Mac and Cheese sauce.

Diving into the world of flavors can be scary but exciting. Math teacher Mr. Rice hasn't always been a teacher. Starting at the age of 12, he worked at Vetic Cantina in Cedar Creek washing dishes before moving his way up to become a cook at 13. Soon enough he went to college and cooked his way through, ending as a catering chef at UNL.

Mr. Rice took his knowledge and shared it when the foods teacher Mrs. Lemmer asked him to come show her class a cooking lesson. He went into the foods room to make Mac and Cheese with the class and let the students get creative with their toppings, and helped them find what what was best for their palates. Some had bacon, bread crumbs, peppers, and onions. The students loved having this experience with him.

Alexia Smedlund is one of the student who participated in the activity.

“ I loved how he talked about making the sauce. I found it interesting how the cheese sauce was made,” she said.

One of his best memories throughout his life journey in the kitchen is experimentation.

“I love to make new things; cooking is fun cause its art with a canvas you can do anything you want sometimes great things come from it an sometimes horrendous creations occur,” Rice said.

Overall Mr. Rice is a man of mystery who has a dream to retire and become a restaurant owner.
