The two teams holding the pom poms often are overlooked for what they do. Behind the scenes, both teams put in dedication to win competitions and get cheers from the crowd. They show up to all the early morning practices and remember the choreography of their routines through the entire season. They have to keep grades up throughout the year so they can perform at football games, basketball games, and state. Dance and cheer isn’t just toe touches and glittery bows, but a year-round sport, full of determination and a group of girls in it for the long haul.

Freshman dance member Kastyn Anderson said, “Most people don’t see how much fun it really is.”

After having a full workout before 8 am and still having a full day ahead of them, these athletes all have different ways to help them survive their day. It can range from going to sleep earlier to needing some sort of caffeine like coffee or an energy drink.

Sophomore dance member Mikayla Bauer said, “I need a lot of caffeine to survive my day.”

Each team has its own state competition. Both teams need to have a certain appearance before state. They can't have hair too short because they need to style it the same as every other member. Let's not forget the spray tans. Everyone must time it so it's not too dark or too light when they perform.

Sophomore cheerleader Macee Kiss said, “A lot of the girls are getting spray tans so we don’t look crusty and musty.”

Spray tans are encouraged, but painted nails are forbidden. Many of the girls are excited to finally be able to get their nails done once the season is over.

The cheer and dance teams don't just perform at games and shake their pom poms. Many don’t understand it is an all-year sport. These performers get a month off after state before they’re back at it again for the next season. Many see the Instagram posts after competitions, people but they don’t understand all the hard work they put in throughout the year to get there to hold the trophy.

These two teams both work hard throughout the year, showing school spirit for the same school in different ways. The bonds the teams bring for all the girls that are part of the teams, bringing a different feeling than anything else.

Senior cheerleader Riley Bennett said, “The bond you make with the team and the feeling of competition is amazing!”
