7th graders get ready to sell candy canes for student council.

Christmas is all about giving at Louisville Middle School. The Middle School Student Council especially loves this holiday because they get to give back and help the Louisville community. The student council runs a fundraiser every year giving the students one week to buy, and then they decide as a group where to donate all of the proceeds. For the past three years they decided to donate to the Louisville Food Bank.

Sponsor of student council, Mr. York said,“Our mission is to bless our school community and our community.”

The student council sells 50-60 candy canes per year, and whatever doesn’t get sold, they send to the Louisville Food Bank as a donation. Each candy cane costs 50 cents. Students and staff members can buy however many they want for anyone in the school. The best thing about receiving candy canes is the reactions of the students.

Mr. York said, “I really love it when kids buy candy canes for someone who doesn't expect it.”

The council had options as to what they wanted to do with all of the money they made from their sales. They all voted on whether to keep it to themselves or to donate it somewhere.

8th grader Jillian Muntz said, “We all voted to donate it to the local Louisville Food Bank so we could help people in need.”

Being able to donate to the food bank is a great way to show how much the LMS community cares for others. The High School Student Council also does a food drive and donates all of it to the food bank for families in need, which drove the middle school to donate to the food bank.

8th grader and student council member Peyton Dew talked about how she loved the idea of donating because she felt good about herself knowing that all donations were going to a good cause! Helping families in need can truly change lives.

“Growing up, and even as a dad with young kids, there were times where we just needed other people to bless us. We know how terrific that felt, and it is just as terrific to give it,” said Mr. York.
